I have a 4 year old yorkie who is a delight and has always played well with other dogs

I have a 4 year old yorkie who is a delight and has always played well with other dogs. My son brought home a 6 week old chocolate lab puppy this week and my yorkie is not happy about it at all. If the puppy gets close to any of us, Peanut (Yorkie) would charge at the new puppy and try to snap at it. We have managed to get Peanut to stay put when the puppy approaches my son or I by rewarding him with praise and petting. However, while he is now staying his distance, he is salvitating (slobbering) to the point that it is dripping from his mouth. I have never seen him have any signs of salvitating in any situation in the past 3 years and 8 months that I have had him. Is there any explaination for this? Please advise.
