Acepromazine Maleate

Acepromazine maleate is an antipsychotic agent and dopamine antagonist that is chemically related to phenothiazine. It is extensively used in veterinary practice as a sedative and antiemetic.3 Acepromazine maleate is approved by the FDA for use in the dog, cats, and horse. The drug is more potent than chlorpromazine and promazine and is effective parenterally in small doses. The primary use of acepromazine has been as preanesthetic agent in the dog, cat, and horse. It markedly potentiates barbiturates and facilitates handling and restraint of animals.2
