Bacitracin Methylene Disalicylate
Bacitracin methylene disalicylate is an antibacterial drug used for the treatment of bacterial enteritis caused by pathogens susceptible to bacitracin and streptomycin such as Escherichia coli, Proteus spp., Staphylococcus spp., and Streptococcus spp., and for the symptomatic treatment of associated diarrhea.3 Also used in ointment form for topical treatment of a variety of localized skin and eye infections, as well as for the prevention of wound infections. 4
Bacitracin is a mixture of related cyclic polypeptides produced by organisms of the licheniformis group of Bacillus subtilis var Tracy. It intereferes with the synthesis of bacterial cell wall leading to cell death.
Bacitracin methylene disalicylate antibiotic is used as veterinary food additive to increased rate of weight gain and improved feed efficiency; as an aid in the control of transmissible enteritis in growing turkeys complicated by organisms susceptible to bacitracin methylene disalcylate; for control of swine dysentery associated with Treponema hyodysenteriae; as an aid in the control of necrotic enteritis caused or complicated by Clostridium species in chickens. 2
