Droperidol

A butyrophenone with general properties similar to those of haloperidol. It is used in conjunction with an opioid analgesic such as fentanyl. It is also used as a premedicant, as an antiemetic (to control vomiting), and for the control of agitation in acute psychoses. It lowers the incidence of nausea and vomiting during surgical procedures and provides antiemetic protection in the postoperative period. 1

In dogs the drug is used as an analgesic and tranquilizer. It is 400 times more active than chlorpromazine or chlorprothixene and 10 times more active than haloperidol. It is the most potent known antiemetic known. Its use in veterinary medicine is primarily in combination with fentanyl for analgesia. 3
