Methoxyflurane
Methoxyflurane is a general anesthetic drug used since the early 1960's. This drug administered by inhalation. It induces muscle relaxation and reduces pain sensitivity by altering tissue excitability.
Methoxyflurane (Metofane® Inhalation) is approved by FDA in dogs, cats, horses and other domestic animals for the induction and maintenance of general anesthesia. 2
Some dogs recover quietly; others with excitation, thrashing, and whinings. Cats may also recover with excessive agitation. Methoxyflurane may produce depression in newborn kittens. Multiple exposure of dogs to this drug may cause liver and kidney toxicity. 4
