    Overview

The European pear (Pyrus communis), also known as the common garden pear, is still to be seen in old gardens and orchards. With black bark, glossy green leaves, and white flowers that blossom in spring, it rivals many ornamental small trees for charm.

It is now difficult to obtain, new modern hybrids being more valuable for fruit quality and quantity. Pyrus calleryana, the Callery pear or Bradford pear, has white spring flowers and good scarlet and purple fall color.
