    History & Overview

The Grand Bleu de Gascogne also called as Great Gascony Hound and Great Gascony Blue, is one of the oldest scenthound breeds known since the 14th century. It takes its name from Gascony, a region in southern France and has been used for hunting bear, wolf, wild boar, hare and also for tracking.

    Roles

The Grand Bleu is especially valuable for working cold tracks. He is meticulous and thorough, and, although it may seem a little slow, he is very dependable and always delivers guaranteed results. The Grand Bleu de Gascogne has been bred by serious hunters and is not suitable for living in an apartment. He needs considerable space and plenty of exercise, and, most of all, he needs a job to do.

    Character

Strong, self-assured, obedient and calm, this natural pack hound has a very keen sense of smell. His gentle and somewhat sad expression should not be mistaken for lack of determination, as his legendary courage earned him an excellent reputation among serious hunters. He does not usually attack, but he is brave enough to keep the big game at bay for a long time.

    Appearance

The coat consists of short, thick and dense hair. The color is entirely mottled (black and white) giving a slate blue effect. There may be two black patches at either side of the head, leathers and around the eyes. Two tan markings above the eyes, making the dog look like it has four eyes. There are traces of tan on the cheeks, lips, inner side of thighs, legs and under the tail. According to the breed standard, the ideal height at the shoulders is between 62 and 72 cm.
